You can’t tell, but the guy in this photo has sweat everywhere, he’s running talking points through his head at a thousand miles an hour, and dreading the questions he assumes he isn’t ready for.
A friend told him earlier that day, “Psh, it’s just a conversation, it’s not a big deal, you got this.”
They mean well, and they technically weren’t wrong, but it didn’t help either.
It’s true – that job interview IS a conversation, and it’s true, he’s going to be okay, but that doesn’t change how the stakes of that conversation can get in the way of the discussion going well.
Can you relate? Have you found yourself in that chair, deliberately dressed and “ready” but definitely not ready? A lot of the time, candidates understandably go in nervous. Part of the reason for this anxiety is the mentality that we don’t have any authority in the meeting, that we’re going to go with whatever flow the potential employer establishes.
In reality, they’re interested in you, they’re bringing you in, because you have something they’re looking for. You have agency and influence in this meeting of the minds and you have every right to feel confident about what you bring to the table. If you aren’t yourself in the job interview, how do you know whether or not you’d be a good fit?
