September 11, 2001, is a day forever etched into our nation’s memory. On its 24th anniversary, we pause not only to remember those we lost and the families forever changed, but also to honor the men and women who chose to serve in its aftermath.
For many veterans, 9/11 was the call to action. Some were already in uniform, standing watch when the world shifted that morning. Others were moved to raise their right hand in the days, months, and years that followed — determined to defend a nation in mourning, and to stand for freedom, resilience, and unity.
Their service was more than a duty; it was a profound act of patriotism. They carried the weight of our collective grief and turned it into commitment. They endured deployments, separations from family, and the challenges of an uncertain fight — all because they believed in protecting something greater than themselves.
And that patriotism didn’t end when the uniform came off. Today, those same veterans are business leaders, educators, mentors, and community advocates. They bring the same sense of mission, resilience, and dedication to their civilian lives as they once did in uniform. Their contributions continue to shape our communities in ways that are both visible and unseen.
As we reflect on this solemn anniversary, let us also recommit ourselves to valuing and supporting those who served in the wake of 9/11 — and all who continue to serve today. Their legacy of patriotism reminds us that even in our darkest moments, courage and unity can light the way forward.
To the veterans of 9/11 and those who answered the call after: your service is remembered, honored, and deeply appreciated.
